Spring is in the air

Just over A week ago we were still knee deep in snow, then the season turned and Spring is right around the corner. Great timing because I had my first wedding booking of the year this weekend and we desperately needed better weather to be able to take the photographs that the couple had their hearts set on. I think they will be pleased with the outcome, here's a sneak peak

Looking back, looking forward

I just wanted to wish everyone a very happy and prosperous new year with a look at 4 of my favorite images from 2010

Wedding stories

Every wedding has it's own unique story to tell and over the coming months I want to share a few of those stories: Gemma and Dave: I had the pleasure of working with this couple in the middle of an un-naturally dry Peak District Summer. They were both committed hikers and Dave was also a member of the local mountain rescue team. On the morning of the wedding Dave and his best man had planned a climbing expedition to Burbage Edge so that is where the photographic coverage started. We spent a pleasant hour or so with them before leaving Dave dangling precariously over a precipice. Our next stop was the Hope Valley and Losehill Hall, where Gemma and her parents were undertaking the final stages of their preparations. Naturally enough there was a certain amount of concern for Dave's safety as well as the problems he would cause if something were to go wrong!! Of course nothing did go wrong and the wedding went ahead at the alloted time....... well it actually started jus

The Engagement photoshoot

For Jane Haslam Photography the engagement photo-shoot is an essential step in the build up to any wedding, as it provides an ideal opportunity not only to establish confidence in the photographer but also establishes a relaxed working relationship between photographer and client. The photo-shoot takes place at a location and time of the clients choosing. We take our time to wander around the location, discussing likes, dislikes as well as trying out various poses, The resulting portfolio is made available for immediate download as well as being included on the final photo cd. The images can also be used to produce  personalized gifts that say thank you to family and friends. Gemma and Dave  had a love of wide open spaces and for them it was important that their photo-shoot placed them in the landscape where they loved to walk their dogs. For Ben and Ruth the lure of a vibrant field of rapeseed proved too much temptation and even though Ben was strugg

Back to business, ash or no ash

After a lovely Easter in England I just managed to make it back to the USA before European airspace was shut down because of the unpronouncable Icelandic volcano. So now over the next month I have the chance to firmly establish Jane Haslam Photography in the Hudson Valley. On Saturday I am covering my first Bar Mitzvah for Aaron and his mom Laurie and then early in May I have the privelige of photographing the wedding of Tracey and Rich. I spent the day yesterday scoping out the locations in Brewster and New Rochelle and just cant wait to get going. In the meantime Sophie and Chris's portfolio has been completed and the images are now online. It was a lovely day with almost perfect weather. Holymoorside and Hassop Hall proved to be excellent venues as expected and hopefully my photography does the day justice. Sophie had her heart set on an image taken in the candle light on the stone staircase which lead up to the baqueting hall. I'm sure she's pleased with the result, I k

Easter in Derbyshire

Well it's been an Easter back in the UK for me and a great chance to catch up with friends and family. I've also finished my book and submitted 47,000 words and 200 images to the publishers........ phew. Can't wait to see it published now. Before I fly back to New York I will be photographing Sophie and Chris's wedding. It's promising to be a lovely day in two smashing venues, can't wait. First its Holymoorside and a quaint little church that has an interior flooded with light - just to make it easy for the photographer :-) Then its on to Hassop Hall near Bakewell. This will be the first time I've worked there and I must say its a fantastic place, full of character. I had a walk around both venues on Good Friday with Sophie and Chris and we've identified a number of locations for the photography..... there's just so much choice I won't know when to put the camera down. Their pre-wedding shoot has just been posted too and to finish here's a

Live and Loud

As to be expected there's loads to do here - still finishing up the book, got a new business to promote and working hard to get action images for Pawling Schools. Wouldn't have it any other way though, I just love what I do. However as I was thinking about the next steps that I have to take with my website I had a yearning to revisit my music photography. Perhaps the Spring would be a good time to start checking out a few local venues and listening to a few local bands. Heres a selection of my favourites from the last couple of years. Comments would be great, better still anyone know any bands that need publicity photography????
